The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
