Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major explosions rocking the Iranian capital, amid claims from Israel that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, without initially offer further details.
Background: Escalating Strains and Prior Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Key events preceding this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the region, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more talks planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or face serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They rejected claims about weapons development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation remains fluid, with additional reports anticipated as events unfold.
