The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.
This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is situated around 8 miles from his dwelling.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that he be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.
The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
