As any major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category that year
- Another creative title missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
- Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
